Matt Frederick

Associate Vice President for Legal Affairs

Matthew H. Frederick joined the Office for Legal Affairs in 2025. His practice involves providing strategic legal advice on matters impacting the University’s many colleges, units, and schools. 

Before joining the University, Matthew was a partner at Lehotsky Keller Cohn LLP in Austin, where he handled complex litigation at both the trial and appellate levels. He previously served as Deputy Solicitor General in the Office of the Texas Attorney General, where he represented the State in dozens of appeals before the U.S. Supreme Court, federal courts of appeals, and the Texas Supreme Court. His work included significant cases involving constitutional, election, and administrative law. Earlier in his career, he practiced commercial and appellate litigation at Reeves & Brightwell LLP and Vinson & Elkins LLP.

Matthew earned his J.D. with high honors from The University of Texas School of Law, where he served as Editor-in-Chief of the Texas Law Review and was named Chancellor-at-Large. He received his B.A. in History, cum laude, from Tulane University. Following law school, he clerked for Judge Michael W. McConnell of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit and Judge Samuel B. Kent of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Texas.

He is admitted to practice in Texas, the U.S. Supreme Court, and multiple federal appellate and district courts.
